9-1-1 and Fire Safety Workshops

In early 2015 families began informing Proyecto Azteca that they were having issues with 9-1-1. One or two of the following things were happening to families:

  • An emergency would occur and emergency responders would take too long or not show up at all

  • Families were being dropped or not being issued home insurance because their address did not match with the one registered with 9-1-1

Proyecto Azteca found out that many families in rural areas did not have or know their correct address, often times, these families had multiple addresses (county, city, mailing and etc.). So when a family would call 9-1-1 and give dispatchers an address, they would be giving an address that was not in the emergency response system and in turn, responders would have a difficult time finding the address given to them because it was not registered in their system.

Over the years Proyecto Azteca also found that families needed more information on fire safety and has used the 9-1-1 workshops to address the issue with families. The following bilingual fire safety information is passed out to families and children who attend the workshops are also engaged in the conversation and families are encouraged to go through checklists together to prevent house fires.

Proyecto Azteca brought the issue To the Rio Grande Equal Voice Network Housing working group and the group found that there were many issues occurring as a result of addressing. In the summer of 2015, with the help and coordination of Hidalgo County Precinct 2 and LRGVDC (Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council) 9-1-1 Proyecto Azteca began a series of workshops to help inform families living in colonias and other rural areas of the addressing issue. LRGVDC 9-1-1 has come out to help families find out if they have the correct 9-1-1 address; if they do not, they help them register their address to help.

Families may contact LRGVDC 9-1-1 to verify their address or if they have any other questions.
